 Packing for an Expedition... or Two

For someone with Wanderlust, it is always exciting to feel there is a good excuse to visit your favorite travel store and find cool new gear and apparel to accompany you and bring added comfort with you along your journey. Rules of travel, especially post-COVID travel, would dictate it is not necessary and likely not possible to bring all of your favorite new tactical gear. As you likely can't shove 12 pounds of stuff into a 5 pound bag, save some of your cash for enjoyment in memories and adventures while on the road. 

In the end of this FIFTH packing attempt, I did fit most items into my main bag (plus another bag for the overhead). Oh, but then I turned and remembered I have the pleasure to walk through the airport in these bad boys - as they were never going to fit in the suitcase to begin with!

 On the Bridge of the National Geographic Resolution The young man in the above picture, Efrem Ghirmai, has quite a cool job! He is the first officer, or second in command to the Captain of the National Geographic Resolution. A former Olympic Swimmer, Efrem works for months at a time navigating ocean waters. As he described, navigating the waters is similar to playing video games - with a few more dials and a lot more responsiblity!  Each instrument, and each display on the Bridge, shows real time information of ship operations, navigation, weather, satellite imagery, etc. Undoubtedly, years of training and persistence comes into play for safe operation of such a large vessel.  In a later StoryMap, I will share some details of the Azipods used aboard the National Geographic Resolution. Life North of The Artic Circle

Expedition Log - May 31, 2022 Longyearben, Svalbard Early morning departure from downtown Oslo and Hotel Bristol on a charter plane for Longyearben, Svalbard. Even though recognized as under Norweign control, the flight to Svalbard requires us to travel through customs. During the 3-hour flight to the largest island north of the Arctic Circle, we pass over Bear Island (which we will return to later on the expedition). Bear Island is the farthest southern islands considered to be part of Svalbard - named for a polar bear that Willem Barents' expedition encountered when first discovered the island.  The town of Longyearben is a colorful yet simple village of sturdy houses able to withstand long Arctic winters. Upon our arrival, we immediately go to a Camp Barentz, located 10km outside of Longyearben, to meet a dog sled operation and snack in a traditional Norweign Gammen- described as a "round wooden house with an indoor barbeque pit".  Longyearben seems to be a small scale...

Polar Bears, Walrus, and Glaciers - Oh My!

Exploring the Arctic Coastline - Bellsund, Svalbard Afternoon of June 1, 2022 After the excitement of polar bears and walrus this morning, this afternoon we took Zodiak boats to a shoreline to explore the area of a receding glacier. In order to leave ship, a designated Polar Bear Guard had to disembark the ship first and scout the entire shoreline before we were allowed to come ashore! (The Polar Bear Guard is a 23 year old woman from Estonia - she was pretty INCREDIBLE! What a profession! Can you imagine?!?)  The geology of this land is completely foreign to me - but I love to see the colorful flowers amid the glacial rocks. The rocks are so cold that ice crystals form on their surface. Of course, I had to do some quick water sampling. (Water was, not surprisingly, pretty clean) There were a number of animal tracks and even an old bone, thought what it belonged to, I have no clue!  Before departing back to the Resolution, we wandered towards the receding glacier for a closer ...
